Kaløvig Bådehavn

Kaløvig Bådehavn lies on Kalø Vig at the northern end of Aarhus Bay, about 15 kilometres north of Aarhus with the Mols Bjerge hills as a backdrop to the east. The harbour is owned and run by the sailing club Kaløvig Bådelaug — a club harbour rather than a municipal one, and reserved for leisure craft.

Its history is unusual. The club was founded at Løgten Kro in October 1966, and the members built the first harbour themselves from 1968 on land belonging to the Studstrup power station, using whatever they could get: surplus soil from the power-station site, concrete blocks from Aarhus harbour, materials from demolished buildings, old tramway rails and a decommissioned mink farm. When the power station needed the land back, the members demolished their own harbour in October 1982 and built a new one slightly to the south — this time as a lagoon around a central island. It was finished in 1983 and formally opened in May 1984.

Today the harbour holds around 550 berths across thirteen jetties plus the Lagoon, and the club has some 900 members. Kaløvig is a Danish Sailing Association training centre and a Team Danmark elite centre, has hosted European and World championships, and has a judges' tower on the quay. Both harbour and adjoining beach hold the Blue Flag.

Visiting boats use the green/red sign system — a green sign means the berth is free. The speed limit in the harbour and its entrance is three knots, and fishing and swimming inside the harbour are not allowed; the relevant chart is no. 112. Ashore, the Kaløvig Badehotel og Brasserie faces the water, and behind the red buildings on the east side there is a bathing jetty and a sauna. Seals and porpoises are seen regularly out in the bay.
