Esbjerg Strand Lystbådehavn

New marina on an artificial island in the Wadden Sea National Park, built 2017-2019. Access runs through a storm surge gate that closes when exceptional high water is forecast — more often in winter.

Description

Esbjerg Strand Lystbådehavn sits on an artificial harbour island south of the town, inside the Wadden Sea National Park. The harbour is new: the moles, the dyke, the sixty-thousand-square-metre island, the bridges and the lagoon were built between 2017 and 2019, and the first boats moved in during the winter of 2019 from the old marina inside the commercial port. The harbour is owned by Esbjerg Municipality and run day to day by the sailing club Esbjerg Søsport.

What sets this harbour apart from every other in Denmark is the storm surge gate. Access to the basin runs through a barrier built to hold more than five metres of difference in water level between the harbour and the North Sea. It is closed when an exceptional high water is forecast, and that decision rests with the municipal harbour master alone, based on the Danish Meteorological Institute's predictions. In winter it closes at a forecast of a metre and a half, so closures are more frequent then. A closure is signalled from shore by a dark ball and three lamps. When the gate is in its floating position it opens and closes with the tide, so entry is possible only within limits. If you cannot get through, you may lie in the outer harbour free of charge — but navigating the entrance is at your own risk.

The way in from the North Sea runs through Grådyb. The Sædden Strand leading line is steered on 054° and takes you through the dredged channel over the Grådyb Bar. The channel is around two hundred metres wide, marked with lit buoys, cardinal marks and leading lights; a water-level gauge on its south side shows a yellow flash. The tidal stream through Grådyb and across the harbour entrances can reach two knots. The large vessels deserve particular care: they are bound to the channel, have limited room to manoeuvre, and generate both suction and unpredictable wind as they pass. Outbound traffic waits for inbound, and the buoyage system changes character just south of Esbjerg.

Behind the gate lies the harbour island with floating pontoons, a wooden-ship quay and an outer harbour with a trailer ramp. There are four berth categories — resident, long-stay guest, visitor and free-harbour — allocated by the sailing club, except for the island's quay edges, the wooden-ship berths and the outer harbour, which the harbour master handles himself. If a resident is away for more than forty-eight hours the berth must show a green sign, and it can then be given to visitors. The speed limit is three knots, and there are zones reserved for kayaks, wakeboarding and swimmers that boats may not enter.

The maritime centre Lanternen opened in January 2023, designed by Werk and Snøhetta. It is recognisable by the hole in the middle of its roof, which became necessary to stay within the permitted floor-area ratio. The building holds club rooms, showers, a kitchen and a lounge, shared with divers, the rowing club, the harbour school and the winter bathers.

Esbjerg is a planned town. The harbour act was passed in April 1868 and the port came into use in 1874, replacing Husum, lost in 1864 — which is why the street grid is rectilinear. The ground where the marina now stands was once fish processing and shipyards. It is a quarter of an hour's walk into town, passing the sculpture Man Meets the Sea, the Fisheries and Maritime Museum with its seal enclosure, the museum cutter E1 and the motor lightship Horns Rev. Fanø lies four kilometres away across Grådyb.
