Baltrum Hafen

The harbour of Baltrum sits on the south shore of the smallest inhabited East Frisian island and is clearly split in two: on the western side the ferries and supply vessels berth, on the eastern side spreads the Baltrumer Bootsclub (BBC) yacht harbour. Here some seventy berths on finger pontoons wait for visitors – close to fifty of them are explicitly reserved for guest crews. There is no fuel pump; diesel or petrol must be bunkered before arrival.

Baltrum is tidal Wadden Sea cruising. The approach comes in via the Baltrum Wattfahrwasser, with around 1.5 metres of water at the entrance at normal high water. At low tide part of the harbour dries out, and depending on your berth your boat will sit on the sand for a few hours – not dramatic on this island, but something to plan for. Once inside, you feel the island's quiet rhythm immediately: no cars, sandy paths, horse-drawn carts instead of delivery vans.

The BBC clubhouse with toilets and showers for visitors stands opposite the bridge to the pontoons, staffed in the evening; this is also where mooring fees are paid. It's a five-to-ten-minute walk to the village, with a bakery, Frisian cafés and a quiet main beach on the north coast. If you're after Wadden Sea and Nordic calm rather than busy marina nightlife, Baltrum is the right call.
